Vitamin Supplements Children With ADHD
Friday, April 29th, 20117 yr old son just diagnosed with ADHD- need web links to diets, alternative therapy?
My 7 yr old son was just today diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder, and ADHD. The doctor asked that I take a few days to mull over the diagnosis, then go back to discuss treatment options with him. I respect our doctor, but am concerned- I do not want to put my son on medications. I would much rather look into alternative therapies, behavior management, dietary changes, that sort of thing.
Here are the things I am going to try-
behavior mod- a chart and reward based system that rewards for focus and positive behavior
no dairy products
gluten free products
Omega fish oil supplements, as well as his daily vitamin
He will be coming to yoga class 2 nights a week with me
Cutting out processed/coloured foods
If you have had success with an alternative therapy for your ADHD child, please please let me know. I want to explore all options before putting him on medications. Thank you.
What a breath of fresh air to hear a mom WILLING to take alternative measures and not depend on drugs. I currently have a friend who’s constantly at the docter to up her childs meds, change her childs meds to “fix it” Knowing full well what the triggers are – but blatently refusing to read labels and make a life change…
My younger brother has ADHD. This was diagnosed over 20 years ago when no one really knew what it was and chalked it up to bad parenting. My mother bent over backwards to do ANYTHING to help him. Our number one was FOOD. It’s amazing what Red #7 and Yellow #3 can do to a child with ADHD (these are just examples I can’t remember the actual #’s)
So, out they went. We went down to a bare bones diet. I’m talking rice and noodles. Meat was gone, fruit was gone. We dieted like this for about a month (hell for an older child who just didn’t understand (me))
Then she slowly started re-introducing foods and took note of the reactions if there were any.
Since, my brother HAS taken and is currently take meds for ADHD. He’s a college grad and a functioning /contributing part of society. There are still things (even with meds) that can trigger him – again certain foods, dyes etc – but he knows what they are, and knows how to deal with it.
I wouldn’t completely rule out meds – as long as you know you or your child will not depend on them to “fix” you. If you have a good docter (by the sounds of it you do) between the three of you, you could set up a very successul program.
