Essential oils are safe to breathe in and around children?
I'm trying to get rid of all of our air fresheners and candles as I realize that are slightly toxic to our health / lungs. So I'm looking into essential oils to add fragrance to freshen a room and possibly add to a laundry. If you're sure to inhale or smell to me and especially my young children? On the other hand, I read you can dilute with water and as an air freshener spray – if it gets on the floor and I have a crawling baby, it would be dangerous for her? So confused about all this! The main way I'm thinking using them to find a ring of oil to put on top of a light bulb and adding a few drops of perfume in the room. Safe to inhale? (The kids and I)
Good for you that you are getting rid of the candles and air fresheners, completely unnecessary things to add to indoor air pollution. As with any chemical, just try to keep their use to a minimum. The stronger, the volatile oils, like eucalyptus, wintergreen, tea tree etc have a tendency to evaporate faster, more oil in the air may increase the risk of negative effects, at least spicy oils can be beneficial. Personally, I forgot oil ring / idea of the bulb, it only increases the rate of evaporation and so the oil concentration in the air. Well diluted oil should be of minimal risk a child, simply to ensure that all containers of whole oil are out of reach.
