No essential oils really kill germs?
I'm trying to figure out if the transmission of essential oils will kill germs in the air (Such as cold viruses and influenza) and if you really can make an effective cleaner general purpose household use essential oils?
The answer is Yes Entomology Research Institute at Loyola College in Chennai, India conducted the research with 21 essential oils and 6 species of bacteria. The researchers found that cinnamon bark, clove and lime essential oils produced greater growth inhibition with cinnamon oil surpassing by one third to half. The bacteria used were Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteas vulgaris, Bacillus subtilis and auerus aureus. Cinnamon essential oil has been recently proved effective against both sensitive and resistant strains of Helicobacter pylori. Another study demonstrated the efficacy of cinnamon oil against oral infections of resistant strains and sensitive Candida species in HIV-infected patients. The EPA recognizes the effectiveness of essential oils! (Not to imply that the EPA is our protector) essential oils are becoming more and more mainstream. Seventh Generation is a well known and widely available line of cleaning products. The news is that the product line is distinction of being the first and only disinfectants registered natural EPA approved to claim "kills more than 99.99 percent of germs on a natural hard, non porous and effective against common influenza A viruses (influenza or "flu") and related to the H1N1 strain, also known as "swine flu." The active ingredient is thymol, which is derived from the essential oil of thyme. I have always suggested the use of essential oils and household cleaning for broadcast on the air during cold and flu season. Oregano oil – A study cited in the Annals of Clinical Microbiology and Antimicrobials 2009, 8:8 indicate that Artemisia vulgaris vulgare oreganum and have inhibitory effects replication of yellow fever virus. Apparently, the presence of O. vulgare essential oil the culture medium to 11.1 ug / ml produced a 100% yield of virus. (A microgram is Ug, 1 / 1000000 of a gram or 1 / 1000 of a milligram.) Eo Oregano appears to be effective, because of direct inactivation of the virus instead of being effective only at a stage in the viral life cycle. mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) was also tested in the above study, with similar startling results. Artemis is very high in ketones and should be used by the experienced. Tea Tree – A study by European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases showed that replication of a flu strain was severely inhibited the tea tree eo was introduced within 2 hours of infection. This suggests that tea tree eo interfere at an early stage of viral replication, but after adsorption. Tea eo tree is cheap and is fairly stable (it has a long shelf life). I could go on and on. There are many reports on more than laboratory work to test the inhibitory effects essential oils on microbes.
